Overtime pay

You're owed
RM 50.49

Formula used: 1.5× hourly rate for every hour of overtime.

Your derived hourly rate: RM 16.83

These statutory overtime rates apply to employees covered by the Employment Act 1955 — currently those earning RM4,000/month or less, plus manual/machinery-operating workers regardless of wage. Employees outside this coverage may still get overtime under their employment contract, but at whatever rate it specifies.

Overtime multipliers at a glance

  • Normal working day: 1.5× hourly rate per hour.
  • Rest day: 0.5 day's wages if you work half a normal day or less; 1 day's wages up to a full normal day; 1 day's wages plus 2× hourly rate for hours beyond that.
  • Public holiday: 2 days' wages for up to a normal day's work, plus 3× hourly rate for hours beyond that.

Worked example

Say your monthly salary is RM3,500 and your normal hours are 8 a day. Your hourly rate is RM3,500 ÷ 26 ÷ 8 = RM16.83. If you work 3 hours of overtime on a normal working day, you're owed 3 × 1.5 × RM16.83 = RM75.72 on top of your normal pay.

Common questions

Does overtime apply to salaries above RM4,000?

The statutory rates are guaranteed only to employees covered by the Employment Act's First Schedule — generally those earning RM4,000/month or less, plus manual/machinery-operating workers regardless of salary. Above that, your overtime entitlement comes from your employment contract instead.

What if I work overtime on a rest day and exceed my normal hours?

The rest-day calculation already accounts for this — up to a full normal day's hours earns a full day's wages, and any hours beyond that earn an additional 2× hourly rate on top, not the normal-day 1.5× multiplier.
